The Cure is a British rock band formed in Crawley, West Sussex, in 1976. The group members include Robert Smith (vocals, guitar), Simon Gallup (bass), Jason Cooper (drums), and Roger O'Donnell (keyboards). Since the band's formation, the makeup of the members has changed many times, however, the only constant member has been Robert Smith. The Cure were a part of the new wave and post-punk movement that was sweeping across the United Kingdom during the 70s. By the time The Cure had released their second album they were a formidable force and already were asserting strong influence on the direction of the new gothic rock and alternative rock movement. It wasn't until their fourth album that the band's style transitioned into more of a pop sensibility, and this is probably how most listeners know The Cure today. But make no mistake, their earlier music was dark, tormented and beautiful and helped in mobilising the gothic movement. The Cure's music is characterised by Robert Smith's melancholic and droning voice, which is often backed by reverbed guitars and atmospheric keyboards. The band's songs often deal with themes of love, loss, loneliness, despair, and death. However, the band has also been known to write more upbeat songs about hope and happiness. The Cure is considered to be one of the most influential rock bands of the 20th century, and they have inspired many other artists across a wide range of genres. Some of the best cure songs are "Boy's Don't Cry", "Just Like Heaven", "Friday I'm in Love", and "Plainsong". Their music has spanned decades and multiple genres, and because of this, everyone has their own favourite cure song. This makes them one of the popular bands of all time.
