Lyrics

"I think it's dark and it looks like rain, " you said "And the wind is blowing Like it's the end of the world, " you said "And it's so cold, it's like the cold if you were dead" Then you smiled for a second "I think I'm old and I'm feeling pain, " you said "And it's all running out Like it's the end of the world, " you said "And it's so cold, it's like the cold if you were dead" Then you smiled for a second Sometimes you make me feel Like I'm living at the edge of the world Like I'm living at the edge of the world "It's just the way I smile, " you said

About

The opener to The Cure’s magnum-opus Disintegration is as grandiose as the album itself. Released in May 1989, its lush, orchestral melodies introduce the album and build to a crescendo for over two and half minutes before Smith eventually adds vocals. Although it's often an afterthought, given its short duration, it still to this day remains as one of the Cures' best songs. Gregorian chants and other Catholic liturgies are referred to as Plainsong. The track has a mystical, almost hypnotic rhythm that is similar to religious music. Chimes and flowing basslines provide the backdrop for a chilly wind or static storm, creating a bleak atmosphere that persists through the album. The song is a moody, introspective discussion between two characters that is sung in Smith's less-used soft voice. It has no verse/chorus structure, but rather a back and forth based on the spoken lines in the first person.
