Lyrics
Love, love is a verb Love is a doing word Fearless on my breath Gentle impulsion Shakes me, makes me lighter Fearless on my breath Teardrop on the fire Fearless on my breath Night, night of matter Black flowers blossom Fearless on my breath Black flowers blossom Fearless on my breath Teardrop on the fire Fearless on my Water is my eye Most faithful mirror Fearless on my breath Teardrop on the fire Of a confession Fearless on my breath Most faithful mirror Fearless on my breath Teardrop on the fire Fearless on my breath You're stumbling in the dark You're stumbling in the dark
About
"Teardrop" is a song by English trip hop group Massive Attack. The song features vocals from Elizabeth Fraser, former lead singer of Cocteau Twins. Fraser also wrote the lyrics for "Teardrop". The track was originally planned to feature Madonna on vocals with Andrew Vowles, who was the main songwriter for "Teardrop," sending her a demo for her to record vocals over. The band had previously worked with her in 1995 on "I Want You." However, Robert Del Naja and Grantley Marshal wanted Fraser on the song and outvoted Vowles because they thought she would be a better fit for the melancholy nature of the song. Fraser's lyrics were inspired by French philosopher Gaston Bachelard. Fraser had written the lyrics soon after Buckley had passed away in a drowning accident. Some fans speculate that the lyrics reflected her feelings during this time and may be about this singer-songwriter's death. The song was released as the first single from Massive Attack's third album, Mezzanine, in 1998. "Teardrop," which is arguably one of the group's most popular singles, peaked at number 10 on the UK Singles Chart, and was nominated for Best British Single at the 1999 Brit Awards. The song was used in the soundtrack for the medical drama television series House. The music video for "Teardrop" was directed by Walter Stern and features a single continuous shot of a fetus in the womb, accompanied by imagery of nature scenes. Stern said that he wanted to capture "the wonder and awe" of life. "Teardrop" has been covered by a number of artists, including José González, Elbow, The Collective, and AURORA. The Collective's cover contained vocals from several well-known acts in the UK's pop and grime scenes including Ed Sheeran, Dot Rotten, Chipmunk, Ms. Dynamite, Mz. Bratt, Tulisa Contostavlos, Rizzle Kicks, Wretch 32, and Tinchy Stryder. This version was negatively received as was the worst chart performance by a Children in Need song in more than a decade.
