About

"Expression" is a song by American hip hop trio Salt-N-Pepa. It was released in August 1990 as the lead single from their second album, Blacks' Magic. The song was written by the group's DJ (Spinderella) and member, Cheryl "Salt" James with production handled by Hurby "Luv Bug" Azor. The track samples James Brown's 1974 song "Funky President (People It's Bad)". "Expression" is a call for black women to be proud of their African heritage and to love their bodies. The song was well-received by critics and is considered one of the group's signature tracks. The song peaked at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100, then was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in the United States before it later attained the platinum status less than three months later. Internationally, the song peaked at number eight in New Zealand, and number nine in Australiapeaked at number 13 in France. The accompanying music video for "Expression" was directed by Hype Williams and it features the trio dancing in front of a brick wall. The video was nominated for two MTV Video Music Awards at the 1991 ceremony. In 2010, Pitchfork Media included the song at number 33 on their list of the "Top 200 Tracks of the 1990s."
