Lyrics
If you leave me now You'll take away the biggest part of me Ooh-ooh-hoo, no Baby, please don't go And if you leave me now You'll take away the very heart of me Ooh-ooh-hoo, no Baby, please don't go Ooh-ooh-hoo, girl I just want you to stay A love like ours is love that's hard to find How could we let it slip away? We've come too far to leave it all behind How could we end it all this way? When tomorrow comes and we'll both regret The things we said today A love like ours is love that's hard to find How could we let it slip away? We've come too far to leave it all behind How could we end it all this way? When tomorrow comes and we'll both regret The things we said today If you leave me now You'll take away the biggest part of me Ooh-ooh-hoo, no Baby, please don't go Ooh, girl Just got to have you by my side Ooh-ooh-hoo, no Baby, please don't go Ooh, mama I just got to have your loving here
About
"If You Leave Me Now" is a song by the American rock group Chicago, from their album Chicago X. The song was written by Peter Cetera and produced by James William Guercio. It was released as a single in 1976 and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming the band's first and only single to reach the top of the chart. The song also topped the adult contemporary chart for six weeks. In 1977, "If You Leave Me Now" won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. The lyrics of "If You Leave Me Now" are about a man begging his lover not to leave him. Cetera has said that he wrote the song in about 15 minutes. He has also said that the lyrics were inspired by his then-wife Diane's threat to leave him. The song is written in the key of F major and has a slow, soulful feel. The verses are sung in a vulnerable, tender voice, while the chorus features a more powerful vocal performance. The song has been covered by many artists, including Michael Bolton, Peter Cetera himself, and Boyz II Men. In 2002, the song was ranked at number 384 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list. It is arguably Chicago's most popular song and resulted in their record company making frequent requests for Cetera to try to recreate the success of this hit. Even once Cetera left the group in 1985, he continued to release #1 hits after his song "Glory of Love" topped the charts, and his duet "The Next Time I Fall" who he sang with Amy Grant, peaked at #4. "If You Leave Me Now" also features prominently in tv shows and movies, with appearances in "The Half of It" (2020), "Shawn of the Dead" (2004), "Daddy's Home 2" (2017), "Big Little Lies" (2017), "Sex and the City" (1998) and "Modern Family" (2022).
