I've lived the life of a poor girl And though I've been happy that way I'd have felt like a queen If only I'd just had a guitar to play And then one day without warning, Momma spoke in her kind, gentle way The peddler just left and I bought for you Your heart's desire today God bless this guitar my momma bought for me today I've done a lot of singin', Lord but I ain't never had a guitar to play My momma takes in washing and she sews a lot for pay And thought she's weary she never complains I guess she's just made that way Pa works awful hard on the farm everyday Just a poor sharecropper for the rich Mr. Jones Who lives down the road a ways It took a lot of hard for both mom and dad, you see But they finally saved up enough to buy this guitar for me So I just wanted to thank you Lord, in a kind and humble way And I want to pay them back if I can make a hit In that great music city USA So Lord, give me a song to play For all the mommas and papas 'cross the way Just like the ones who bought this guitar for me today I've lived the life of a poor girl And though I've been happy that way I feel like a queen as I pray God to bless This guitar today
