Starting as early as 1899 with George Mieles 

, books have been adapted into films. Stuffed into six minutes, the fairytale of 

(1697) plays out on screen without any dialogue or color. Everything happens quickly, so some key details and scenes are left out. The entire beginning and background of Cinderella’s story is cut out; instead, Cinderella is already begging to go to the ball with her stepsisters but gets turned away. There is only one scene at the ball instead of two, and it moves rather fast into the Prince searching for whoever fits into the glass slipper and, once finding Cinderella, instantly into their wedding. There is no resolution to what happened with her stepsisters and stepmother and a grand finale. Even from the first book to the film adaptation, significant changes were made to the plot. Background music for films during this time was often performed by an orchestra, following along with the film in front of a live audience.

(1939) is one of the most notable book-to-film adaptations. Iconic and innovative for the time, 

 stands as a classic still to this day. Since movies can’t hold every detail the original book can, some scenes and parts are sacrificed. The original book series written by Frank L. Baum contains fourteen books. With only one film, plenty of details and new characters are missed. In the first book, Dorothy speaks with three of the four witches in Oz. She starts with The Witch of the North, then the Wicked Witch of the West, and finally, Glinda, The Witch of the South. In the film, we see Dorothy only interact with Glinda and the Wicked Witch. Her iconic ruby slippers are silver in the book, but both in the story and film, they contain powerful magic. The heartfelt story of Dorothy and her friends gaining what they yearn for the most is quite similar to the story, but we don’t see what happens to Scarecrow, Lion, and the Tin Man. In the book, they are spread out throughout Oz to use their newfound courage, brains, and heart to help those in the world. Although music is not included during the writing of a book, 

 had plenty of iconic musical moments that helped push the storyline forward, including “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “If I Only Had a Brain.”

In more recent times, the amount of book-to-film adaptations has increased. 

(2024), out in theaters now, is based on the book by Colleen Hoover. Before the movie was released, just off of set photos, fans of the book had harsh comments about the costuming and casting choices, which didn’t seem to match up with the descriptions in the book. A large change from the book comes from the proposal scene between Blake Lively and Justin Bladoni’s characters, Lily Bloom and Ryle Kincaid. In the book, Ryle proposes to Lily earlier on. In the film, it happens later and changes the end result of the hospital scene. Music plays a large part in the film process, especially for book-to-film adaptations, since it can portray the feelings readers feel while reading. “My Tears Ricochet” by Taylor Swift is featured in the trailer for 

. Blake Lively and Taylor Swift are known to be close friends, and Swift's deep-meaning lyrics help portray the feeling of the movie.

(2013), directed by Richard LaGravenese also had many pivotal points changed through the duration of the film. The book series has four books, which are all shoved into one film. After missing many trials and tribulations that Ethan and Lena go through, their relationship feels rushed, and the same goes for the ending decision that readers don’t learn about until the fourth book. Ethan, played by Alden Ehrenreich, and Lena, played by Alice Englert, fight together for Lena to choose the light side instead of succumbing to her family curse and being forced to the dark side of the caster world. Viewers only saw a snippet of this in the film and a completely different end battle scene from the books. Along with a change of relationship dynamic, the sibling dynamic between Lena and Ripley (played by Emmy Rossum) is quite different as well since there isn’t much character development for Ripley as there is in the books that lead to her having two spin-off books of her own. Almost entirely different from the book series, the movie and books should be enjoyed separately for a more enjoyable experience.

The film's soundtrack is notable as it delves into the Southern Gothic vibe the book and movie give viewers. Composed by Thenewno2, Dhani Harrison, and Paul Hicks, each song helps develop the scenes in which they are heard. The final song at the end of the movie, where everything changes, elicits a feeling of hope and loss as both feelings intermingle between our two main characters.

Many viewers believe that books should be turned into TV shows/series rather than movies. Some books that have been turned into TV series include

From Book to Film - Beautiful Creatures

Films have always used music to help advance their stories and keep viewers engaged. As time progressed, films began to focus on specific aesthetics. Curated soundtracks became prominent, and artists were asked to create songs themed around the film.

 was considered edgy due to its plotline and character designs. Being released in the early 2000s, the film had influences from the time in fashion and music. Fitted shirts and low-rise jeans set Jennifer apart as the “popular” character, and looser fitting outfits and glasses for Needy characterize her as the “geek.” Collin is the biggest emo influence in the film, with dark, spiky hair, piercings, and moody eye makeup. However, each character had the essence of emo/scene influence, and so did the music in the film. With songs by Hayley Williams (lead singer of Paramore), Panic! At The Disco, All Time Low, and countless others, iconic pop punk artists made the soundtrack. Fitting with the dark lighting and flaring teenage emotions, the upbeat and edgy tunes fit perfectly with the film’s aesthetics.

An iconic party film needs iconic party tracks. The 2010s were known for dance and club hits. As the characters in the film state multiple times, this would be the best high school party ever, so it would need the best party hits to accompany it. Hits from Eminem, Lil Jon, and Kid Cudi electrify the scenes they accompany and submerge the viewers into the party-like atmosphere. As the party dies down, so does the music near the end. Without the classic club hits and dance tunes, the party wouldn’t have felt as immersive or accented the party scenes well.

The campy film with bright neon colors and a dark main character plays around with the 80’s setting. There are two nearly conflicting aesthetics. Set in the vivid time of the ’80s, the main character, Lisa (Kathryn Newton), enjoys cemeteries and classical music. Letting the two aesthetics flow together, 80’s songs play, and specially curated classical melodies play throughout the film. Two seemingly opposite aesthetics flow perfectly well for Lisa, and The Creature as truths come to light and Lisa falls deeper in love. Keeping with Lisa’s specific style and the time, the soundtrack focuses on both without getting confused.

Set in Oklahoma, country tunes were set to make an appearance. The film had an album that made plenty of scenes. Full of hit country stars and more current popular country artists, the film focused on only that genre of music. The cowboy hats and adrenaline junkies that viewers know as the storm chasers fit right in with the rock/country tunes that play in the background. Although this film is action-packed, instead of using more rock-focused and even metal music, the filmmakers keep with the country aesthetic instead of only using it for a bit throughout certain scenes.

Benj (Mason Thames), Connor (Raphael Alejandro), Eddie (Ramon Reed), and Danah, a.k.a. Koosh (Bardia Seiri), take their first steps into high school as incoming freshmen. The song gives a feeling of royalty as the kids expect to become legends throughout their time in high school. That feeling is quickly cut short when Connor is bestowed the nickname “Fetus” by two upperclassmen who seemingly wish to make the underclassmen’s lives awful.

As the movie's main event is about to begin, the trio enters Koosh’s house for the VIP pregame. However, the boys are disappointed to learn that Koosh can only bring one-plus-one. Benj tells the boys that this is his chance, and Connor and Eddie let him have it without any fighting. “Body” gives the viewers an insight into how Benj feels about his plan tonight. He wants to make a move and become a better and older version of himself by losing his innocence.

Connor and Eddie are back at Eddie’s house. After being annoyed by Eddie’s mom’s new boyfriend and slightly irritated that they got cut from the party, the boys decide to do their version of rebellion. The song plays into that rebellious vibe the two have going, as they take Dennis’ car for a spin, even though Connor only has his permit.

Eddie and Connor enjoy their ice cream at a red light listening to “Teenage Dream” by Katy Perry. Although they aren’t at the party, this song shows that they are doing something to help them build up to their teenage dream and allows them to feel like they aren’t the odd ones out for the night. Two cops eventually pull up beside them at the light, killing the moment, but they move on to pull somebody else over, allowing the boys to catch their breath.

“Pizza Shop” - IDK (with Yung Gleesh)

The viewers are immersed in the party scene of the film. This hip-hop tune sets the stage as viewers see how the party has progressed. Drunk kids are running everywhere, and garbage is all over the floor. Eddie and Connor have just rolled up to check out the party, but this results in them being stuck with taking the most popular girl in school home—Katrina Aurienna (Loren Gray).

“Clothes Off” - Alex Ross feat. Mia Falls

Abby and Benj have had their long-awaited beer together since their late-night talk over the summer. The slow song turns upbeat and adds tension as the two discuss Benj’s feelings for “someone.” Abby can tell it's about her, so she nudges him to make a move. The music transitions into a whimsical beat during the heat of the moment. When Benj goes to make his move, flames erupt from behind him as the haywire chemistry teacher, Mr. Studebacher, experiments with an excuse to stay at the party longer.

The bass-filled tune sets the scene for a quick montage of the main characters. Benj is gaining the popularity he so wished for but at the cost of nobody knowing the real him. He just kissed Abby, but things are about to take a turn for the worst. Koosh is trying to make his move and succeeds in hooking up with a senior girl to impress his older brother. Eddie and Connor help clean up Katrina after her accident in the backseat of Dennis’ car. The song gets the heart pumping as each character makes spur-of-the-moment decisions. All these moves will cause a butterfly effect in the near future for them.

Benj’s sister said he needed to be his true self to win back Abby, and singing to her felt like the way to go. The song shows that Benj is his true self again and that he wishes to make Abby his girlfriend. He cares for her and puts a lot on the line when singing to her. But when he asks about a possible relationship, the crowd erupts in laughter, and Abby rejects him. Losing all the progress from the night before, Eddie and Connor are now considered popular after helping Katrina, and Koosh, who goes but only Danah now, and Benj are back to being little freshmen.

The credits begin rolling, and the song tells the story of being confused in life and learning your way through everything. The boys learned their lessons, and sometimes, just being kind will get you farther in life. An eventful tale for each character taught them valuable lessons that they hope to take with them through the rest of high school.

The Best Music Moments from Incoming

Three teenagers set to have the best party ever are in for a lot more than they can handle. Released in 2012, Project X set the scene with iconic music from the early 2010s.

Thomas (Thomas Mann), Costa (Oliver Cooper), and JB (Johnathan Daniel Brown) are nervous that the party will have no one show up. Taking matters into his own hands and exuding confidence, Costa goes around the school, letting everyone know about the party. Like the song, Costa feels important and confident as he talks to people he’s never spoken to.

“Beamer, Benz, or Bentley”- Lloyd Banks

After all of the pre-party prep; spreading the word, buying alcohol, purchasing drugs, and stealing their “mascot” of the party, the boys and Kirby (Kirby Bliss Blanton) wait for people to arrive since it’s about an hour after the designated start time. The hip-hop beat sets the tone of excitement that plenty of people are starting to show up. Way more than any of the boys expected.

Standing for “white trash party,” the song by Eminem sets the feeling of how the party is starting. Teenagers and college kids are throughout Thomas’ yard. People keep filing in, and chaos is just around the corner. Costa keeps reassuring Thomas that everything will be fine, but people continue entering Thomas’ house, and the neighbors threaten to call the cops because of the noise. Although the music plays to the feelings of all the other characters in the movie, Thomas is full of anxiety during the first half of the party.

Long scenes of music only, with no dialogue, give the immersive feeling that the viewer is at the party as well. This happens multiple times throughout the movie, and the songs usually cut off abruptly as something important just happened in propelling the film forward.

“Pursuit of Happiness”- Kid Cudi (Extended Steve Aoki Remix)

Costa and Thomas shuffle all the partygoers into the back yard, and JB makes sure to keep everyone quiet as two cops pull up to the house. The cops insist on coming in to make sure there isn’t a giant party happening that is causing the noise complaints, but thanks to Costa’s knowledge of the law, he tells them they aren’t allowed to. They finally give it up and tell the boys to keep it down and head on their way.

Costa goes to the yard with Thomas and tells everyone to party on. “Pursuit of Happiness” begins to play in another long music scene. The scenes reveal that everyone is getting progressively more intoxicated and that chaos is growing. Items are starting to break, and the mascot the boys stole (the gnome) gets broken, revealing hundreds of ecstasy pills that everyone takes. Thomas tries to relax after he finally kisses Kirby, but he can’t seem to shake the nerves thoroughly.

As drugs flow through everyone, the song takes on a literal meaning of everyone being “out of their minds.” Thomas is still filled with anxiety as he deals with the thoughts of his coming consequences and tries to keep his parents calm. The voicemail reveals that Thomas’ parents are getting calls from surrounding neighbors about a huge party. Thomas may be out of his mind, but with anxiety.

“Heads Will Roll”- Yeah Yeah Yeahs (A-Trak Remix)

The ecstasy has kicked in for everybody now, including Thomas. Once again, this is another song that can be taken literally. However, people are now acting out even more so than before. People have flooded the house and the backyard, throwing up, ripping pillows, and leaving trash everywhere. Thomas gets brought upstairs by Alexis (Alexis Knapp) to hook up, but he gets caught by Kirby, who storms out of the room. This is just the start of Thomas's downfall and the situation getting out of control.

“Cheap and Cheerful”- The Kills (Sebastian Remix)

This EDM song plays on a more calm and even sad beat during this scene. Thomas just lost his chance with Kirby, and people are starting to leave the party. Some people are out on the streets continuing the party. Thomas stands on top of the roof, taking everything in, and realizes he can’t stop what has started. Since this point, the movie has relied on upbeat hip-hop and party tunes to convey the feelings of everyone, but now they focus more on Thomas’ feelings as everything goes wrong.

T-Rick (Rick Shapiro) comes to the party to get his gnome back, but he comes back with a vengeance. Wielding a flame thrower, he sets Thomas’ house almost fully ablaze and goes along the block, doing the same to the landscaping. The partiers are throwing stuff at the cops, and the firefighters flood Thomas’ house to stop the flames. His dad’s car gets driven into the pool, and finally, everything has come tumbling down on Thomas and his friends. The song is calmer and plays as the sun rises on the trio as they figure out what to do next. Realization sets in, and Thomas tells everyone to go home; this is his problem to fix. Blue lighting from the last bits of night fading away with the song in the back sets the tone for how much just got ruined.

Thomas shows up at school after the events of the party and walks in with Costa and JB. Although their situations aren’t great, everybody at school thinks they are royalty. A little bit of joy sparks through them at the thought of a little bit of a positive impact. The music is light and upbeat, similar to how the three feel. The song doesn’t need lyrics to convey the feeling of hope and shock. Thomas catches Kirby down the hall and apologizes to her. The song quiets at this moment. He tells her his true feelings and that it’s okay if she’s still mad at him. Forgiving him, they hug, kiss, and move forward with their shaky futures. The song becomes upbeat again as the two reconcile. The song closes out the movie with a calmer note.

This film utilizes upbeat party music and slower tunes near the end to show the rise and fall of the best high school party ever thrown. Keeping viewers entwined with the story and music, iconic moments are created, and news clippings show the aftermath and how the story is told from different perspectives.

The Best Music Moments from Project X

Dumped by her long-term boyfriend, Jenny Young (played by Gina Rodriguez), a music journalist goes on one last journey with her two friends by her side before she moves to San Francisco in a week to move up in her career. Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, 

 premiered in 2019 and tells the story of friendship and personal growth with a stellar playlist behind it to mimic the emotions and thoughts of the characters throughout the film. Below are some of the most pivotal scenes and the songs to match.

“Int’l Players Anthem (I Choose You)” - UGK featuring Outkast

The hip-hop tune introduces us to the film as Jenny and Nate(played by LaKeith Stanfield) leave Neon Classic, the underground music show they attend. Giving some background to their love story, the song sets up an enjoyable moment between the two as we begin to learn from the introduction that the two have broken up after nine years together. 

A fitting song for the cut-up scenes showcasing Jenny and Nate’s relationship through the good and bad times. It's almost as if viewers are watching a visual scrapbook. By now, viewers know that Jenny and Nate have broken up, and Jenny is going through tough emotions. “Supercut” tells the story of being confused about the failure of a romantic relationship. The alternative hit tells exactly what Jenny feels in her most vulnerable moments as she figures out her next steps.

Only in the movie, for a brief moment, do the notable first notes of the song drift through the air as Erin and Leah are in bed together. Trying to push their relationship forward, Leah asks Erin to meet her friends. Erin (played by DeWanda Wise) doesn’t say anything back, reflecting that Erin isn’t one for a serious relationship. Later in the film, it’s revealed that Erin has past relationship problems that still haunt her. “Motion Sickness” encapsulates Erin's feelings running through her mind as she navigates what she wants in the brief moment and what she once felt in her past. The song's first line says, “I hate you for what you did,” which mirrors Erin’s feelings about her past relationship.

Jenny is now trying to push past her feelings and mask them with happiness. The uplifting break-up song plays in the background as Erin comes in to help cheer Jenny up. Together, the two sing along and have a bonding moment together before they embark on their adventure for the day. The music ends when Jenny falls into a flashback of her and Nate’s first interaction together. 

“Mansard Roof” is playing at the house party, which sets up a completely different vibe from the scene that started—a more chill feeling of hope instead of the uplifting lyrics of a post-breakup moment. 

A slow buildup of the song plays behind the scene where Jenny is polishing up her article to send off to what will be her first freelance writing job. At first, the song is quiet, showing Jenny’s nerves as she hands Nate her article to read. The song becomes louder and more fast-paced as Nate encourages Jenny and her skills. It finally crescendos with the two of them marking the fountain as “their spot” in celebration of where their lives are moving towards next.

A change of pace for the trio, Erin, Blaire (played by Brittany Snow), and Jenny, comes as they all get ready in a classic outfit change montage. The girls dance around in bliss to the upbeat song as they try on different outfits for Neon Classic. The song comes from their old college-get-ready playlist, so for them, it transports them back to their good old days.

Following the previous scene, Jenny is transported back in another quick flashback of her and Nate. The flashbacks allow the viewers to get a glimpse into their relationship and connect with their characters. “Dreaming of You” plays in the bodega as Jenny, Blaire, and Erin collect snacks to purchase. Trying to give Jenny her space, the girls try to leave and buy their things, but Jenny pulls them back, and together, the girls sing the heartfelt song.

“DOPE” and “Great One” - Jessie Reyez

After a long day, the girls finally walk into Neon Classic. The music is spunky and fast-paced as the girls filter through the crowd, dancing and finding their spot for the night. As they dance, Jenny sees Nate in the back near the bar, her first time seeing him since they broke up. She tries to go and speak to him, but Erin doesn’t let her as she feels it’s the wrong move. Conflict arises between the girls as Jenny heads to the bathroom, trying to get away from them. The song fades, and Jenny heads back out into the crowd after finally being alone. Viewers finally see what happened between Nate and Jenny as he broke up with her; back in the present, Jenny mouths to Nate from across the crowd, saying that she loves him. He responds back with “forever,” their old response to each other. The music slows and is full of feeling as Jenny gets her closure. What she’s been searching for this whole time.

One of the most heartbreaking scenes, if not the most, is when Jenny writes her poem on the subway. The light piano notes perfectly accentuate Jenny’s emotions as she looks back on the good times she had with Nate. The song has no lyrics throughout this scene, but Jenny’s words, paired with the music, are all the viewers need to hear to understand what Jenny is feeling in this moment.

The last scene of the movie is narrated by “Moon River,” as Jenny dreams of Nate taking back what he said and wanting to make the relationship work. Frank Ocean’s voice creates a dreamlike environment, but when Blaire and Erin wake Jenny, his voice fades away. They reflect on their beautiful friendship and where it will go in the future. Jenny finally chooses herself, and the girls realize it’s time for change.

A country ballad that perfectly reflects Miley and Travis’ love story as it flashes in the background of the scene. Swift makes a cameo during this part of the film and performs the song during a fundraiser to save the small town’s park from developers. The country tune enhances the rustic/country setting of the film and Miley’s love story with cowboy Travis as she navigates a new world where everyone knows she is Hannah Montana.

 film contains many powerful songs that reflect the nature of the film. Although “Safe & Sound” wasn’t featured in the film, viewers hear it as the second song during the credits at the end. A slow, heart-wrenching song like “Safe & Sound”

. The sad beat, backed by higher vocals and intense lyrics, gives the viewers a look into what Katniss felt during her time in District 12. The song being placed at the end helps the viewers reflect on what they felt during the film and what may be coming next for Katniss and Peta.

Listeners and viewers can hear the two different perspectives while listening to the song, which shows the back and forth of the couple. This synth-pop tune comes just before Taylor Swift was to release her Reputation album after being on hiatus.

“False God, August, Back to December, Invisible String, Exile feat. Bon Iver” - The Summer I Turned Pretty

Swift was essential to Jenny Han’s writing process during her time with 

 book series. This love and influence made its way into the series on Prime. With many Swift songs featured in the series, some of the most critical scenes include them. “False God” sets the tone as Belly Conklin (Lola Tung) and Conrad Fisher (Christopher Briney) almost kiss for the first time. Interrupted by his jealous brother, Jeremiah Fisher (Gavin Casalegno) shoots fireworks at them to break up the tension. 

“False God” adds to the scene's tension as the euphoric jazz and sensual lyrics add in romantic queues for the budding couple. “August” and “Back to December”

were featured in the trailer for season two, setting the tone for the upcoming more conflicting season. 

“Invisible String,” during the iconic beach and fire scene in season two, describes Belly and Conrad as meant to be together throughout their lives. Constantly being pulled together by what seems to be an invisible string. 

Season 2 features plenty of songs from “Folklore,” one of Swift’s more alternative and indie albums. “Exile feat.
