David Goldstein popularly known by his stage name, Rupert Holmes is a British-American musical artist, dramatist, and author who has released many albums over the years. David Goldstein became widely known with his 1979 hit single, "Escape (The Piña Colada Song). His latest album, "The Mystery of Edwin Drood," was released in 2012.
Born in England in 1947, Holmes began his musical journey at a young age. He started playing the violin at just four years old and later took up the piano. His parents were both musical, with his father being a big band leader and his mother a singer. Holmes was exposed to a wide range of music growing up, from classical to jazz to pop.
He began his professional career as a songwriter in the late 1960s, penning hits for such artists as the Bee Gees and Herman's Hermits. In 1974, he released his debut album Widescreen, which featured the singles "Him" and "Soap Opera." The following year, he released his self-titled sophomore album, which included the singles "Answering Machine" and "Adventure."
In 1976, Holmes released his third album, Singles. The album's title track was a Top 40 hit in the US. The following year, he released his fourth album, Pursuit of Happiness. The album's lead single, "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)," was a massive hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The song remains Holmes's signature tune.
In 1979, Holmes released his fifth album, Partners in Crime. The album featured the singles "Him" and "Partners in Crime." In 1980, he released his sixth album, The Right Place. The album's lead single, "Him," was a Top 40 hit in the US.
Fast-forward to 2012 after he had released many more good projects, Holmes released his latest album, The Mystery of Edwin Drood. The album is a concept album based on the unfinished Dickens novel of the same name. The album features the singles "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" and "You Don't Know Me."
Holmes has also had a successful career as a stage and screenwriter. He wrote the book for the Broadway musical The Mystery of Edwin Drood, which won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2013. He also wrote the screenplay for the film adaptation of his novel Where the Truth Lies, starring Kevin Bacon and Alison Lohman.
